Does frequent ejaculation help prevent prostate cancer in men?
Prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting men globally, and Rwanda is no exception. This form of cancer targets the prostate—a small gland located below the bladder that plays a crucial role in the production and release of semen.
Recent global studies suggest that frequent ejaculation may significantly lower a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer. A notable example comes from Harvard University, where researchers found that men who ejaculated at least 21 times a month had a lower risk of developing the disease compared to those who ejaculated less frequently.
In practical terms, this means that regular sexual activity, masturbation, or any other form of ejaculation may help flush out harmful substances from the prostate, reducing inflammation and improving overall prostate health.
Speaking to us, Dr. Jean Claude Nsabimana, a specialist in men’s health at Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK), offered his insights:
“Although studies show that frequent ejaculation might help reduce the risk of prostate cancer, it is not a standalone solution. A healthy diet, regular physical activity, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol play a much more critical role. That said, maintaining a healthy sex life in a safe and consensual manner does contribute to overall prostate wellness.”
He added:
“The most important thing men can do is undergo annual prostate screening starting at age 40. Ejaculating often without regular checkups gives a false sense of security. Early detection saves lives.”
While research suggests potential benefits, some findings also indicate that excessive ejaculation, particularly during adolescence, may contribute to long-term prostate changes. Overdoing it—especially through compulsive masturbation—has also been linked to emotional fatigue, anxiety, and social withdrawal in certain cases.
Regular ejaculation can be one element of a healthy lifestyle, but it must be accompanied by balanced nutrition, physical exercise, timely medical checkups, and moderation in all habits. Men are encouraged to take a holistic approach to their well-being.
