Nyungwe Unveils New Tourism Attractions, Including Africa’s Longest Zipline

Nyungwe National Park has cemented its place among Africa’s unique tourist destinations with the official launch of three major attractions: the “Nyungwe Canopy Zipline” — now the longest on the continent, the “Gisakura Rope Course” for adventure and team challenges, and the Munazi Eco Lodge, a modern lodge located deep within the rainforest.

These developments, introduced through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and the park’s management, aim to enhance eco-friendly tourism while boosting the park’s appeal. African Parks, which co-manages Nyungwe with the Rwandan government, said the new experiences will offer both local and international visitors a rare chance to soar above a rich biodiversity hotspot and enjoy a safe, immersive stay within the forest.

Irene Murerwa, Head of Tourism at RDB, described the additions as a milestone in Nyungwe’s evolution as a sustainable tourism destination.

“This further strengthens our vision of delivering tourism that touches visitors’ hearts while opening opportunities for communities around the park,” she said.

Protais Niyigaba, CEO of the Nyungwe Management Company, added:

“From the thrill of the Zipline, to rope-based adventure games, to resting in a serene forest lodge, we are confident every visitor will leave with unforgettable memories.”

Africa’s Longest Zipline – 1,935m Above the Rainforest

The new zipline starts at Uwinka Visitor Centre and stretches 1,935 meters, making it the longest in Africa. It is divided into three sections, each named after a primate species native to Nyungwe. This aerial adventure allows participants to glide over mountains while taking in unparalleled views of the forest canopy.

Gisakura Rope Course – A Test of Strength and Skill

Located near the park’s western entrance at Gisakura, this rope course spans 280 meters and features 21 obstacles, including five short ziplines. It challenges visitors physically and mentally through activities like climbing, balancing, and maneuvering along ropes, making it ideal for both groups and solo adventurers.

Munazi Eco Lodge – Peace and Comfort in the Heart of the Forest

Munazi Eco Lodge offers 20 rooms designed to blend harmoniously with the environment. Situated near Pindura along the Kigali–Rusizi road, the lodge consists of nine buildings made with eco-friendly materials sourced from the forest, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Guests can enjoy the sounds of wildlife such as chimpanzees and monkeys, and on clear days, even catch views of Lake Kivu. The interior décor draws inspiration from local cultural heritage, adding a unique touch that combines tourism with tradition.

Nyungwe – A Treasure of Biodiversity

Covering 1,019 square kilometers, Nyungwe is one of Africa’s most pristine rainforests. It feeds major rivers like the Nile and Congo, and hosts over 1,100 plant species, 345 bird species, and 85 known mammal species.

Nyungwe offers unmatched opportunities for sustainable tourism, reconnection with nature, and appreciation of Africa’s natural heritage.
