Eastern Province: Plans Underway for New Hospitals in Rwamagana and Ngoma
Authorities in Rwanda’s Eastern Province have announced plans to build two new district hospitals in Rwamagana and Ngoma to help residents who struggle to access healthcare services nearby.
The announcement was made during a consultative meeting held in Rwamagana on August 22, 2025, bringing together leaders from the village level to the provincial level. The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Local Government, Habimana Dominique.
In Ngoma District, the new hospital is planned for Sake Sector to serve residents of Zaza, Mugesera, Rukumberi, Gashanda, and Jarama sectors, who currently have to travel long distances to access services at Kibungo Hospital.
In Rwamagana District, a hospital is planned for Nyagasambu in Fumbwe Sector to benefit residents of Fumbwe, Karenge, Muyumbu, Nzige, and Nyakariro sectors, who are often referred to Rwamagana Hospital or sent even farther to Masaka or Kacyiru hospitals.
Jean de Dieu Ndaruhutse, the Executive Secretary of Sake Sector, said the distance from Sake to Ngoma Hospital exceeds 30 kilometers, forcing some residents to request financial support for transport when seeking medical care.
Pudence Rubingisa, the Governor of Eastern Province, said consultations with the Ministry of Health revealed that Nyagasambu and its surrounding areas have a large population, and residents face significant challenges accessing distant hospitals.
He stated, “We presented the case to the Ministry of Health, and they acknowledged the need. The next step is to find funding and decide on the implementation timeline.”
At present, Eastern Province has 11 hospitals, 121 health centers, and 326 health posts. Additionally, 15,156 community health workers support residents in accessing basic healthcare services close to home.
